Just in case anybody has wondering exactly what the Sea Lynx (Lints) is like, I thought I would make a post about it. (Disclaimer: I am not an historic ship expert, nor indeed any other kind of ship expert either, and it is ultimately a fantasy world ship with fantasy ship details, cf. BIG STARING GREEN EYES.)
While it doesn't conform exactly to any particular real world ship, the Sea Lynx is essentially a blend of the Venetian galea grossa, the large galley that was used primarily for mercantile purposes; and its more militarized offshoot, the galleass.
The galea grossa was designed to be able to hold more cargo than a standard galley, and it was also meant to be sailed at least as much as rowed. It was a taller, slower, and less maneuverable ship than the plain galley, but boasted improved stability on the open sea and was better able to take advantage of favorable winds. As a hybrid, it wasn't the ideal ship for any single situation, but could perform competently in a wider variety of conditions than the galley.
The galleass was a slightly later development that arose from the galea grossa, but it was heavily geared towards warfare. Although it too had both multiple sails and oars, it was a heavy, slow, poorly maneuverable vessel, but due to being extremely well armed with cannons and/or heavy ballistae, could be extremely potent in combat.
The Sea Lynx is much lighter (and, alas, less armed) than the galleass, and overall has more of the characteristics of a galea grossa. But like the galleass it features rowing galleys set somewhat beneath the level of the main deck (and, uniquely, also fully enclosed, because RL galleys/galleasses didn't have to deal with mistmonsters), and it is a little more built up than a regular galea. It has three masts (main, mizzen, and fore), and also three full decks (maindeck, lower deck with cabins/bunkrooms and mess, and cargo hold), along with forecastle and aftcastle decks. Its cargo hold is more spacious than that of a regular galley, but still will depend on moving a significant quantity of high value-low volume merchandise in order to be truly successful. Good luck, Prince Demetrius, we're all counting on you.
It is essentially a very innovative ship for the Adelantean, being expressly designed for long distance trade and travel and built to weather open seas sailing, which as we know, NOBODY DOES OMG. Barring hideous unforeseen disasters, the Sea Lynx will likely be the main transport between St. Loomis and Omrazir for quite a while, so everybody should be aware just how super-cool they are to be riding along on her maiden voyage.
Here are some galley, galea grossa, and galleass pictures just for general reference; though again, the Sea Lynx is not entirely like any of them.
