Apparently, some kind of great commotion went down below in the bilge; a few dozen passengers and crew all crowding into those squalid chambers, supposedly to enact some magic upon the ship. What's certain is that they tracked filth all over the floor coming back out again, bringing with them a badly injured man who looked to have been savaged by rats.
