Date: A late afternoon ------- Location: St Loomis, Clinic on Warehouse Street
A large amount of beeswax coats the current lime washing on the back wall. The wax arches over the wall, and holds a varied sprawl of blue paint over and between clearly planned lines of gaps. An assortment of paintbrushes and mixed paint in a range of blue hues is available in a bowl and on a wooden palette.
(Ighlaf): Ighlaf is standing near the painted wall, fingers slightly smudged with blue shades of paint as they gently pry up a section of wax set on the wall with a small knife. Strips of parchment underneath are revealed, guiding their removal as they aim to clear out the shapes overtop the parchment. Blue smudged sections of wax are somewhat scattered around the floor, although some attempt was made to place some in a sack; the rough shape of the floors doesn't spur as much carefulness as the walls.
(Ziyad): The light coming in from the doorway's blocked off for a second by a short figure, which quickly resolves into Ziyad when he steps deeper into the clinic. There are some woad blue stains on his fingers, much faded after some vigorous scrubbing. "You're taking off some of the wax now?" he asks curiously, moving towards the back wall to join Ighlaf.
(Yasin): The afternoon light is further interrupted by yet another figure standing in the doorway, and this time, that figure is much wider and a few degrees taller than the scholar. The burly form of Yasin then shuffles into the clinic, and he asks with a smile, "How late am I? What did I miss?"
Honey-brown eyes flit immediately to Ziyad and Ighlaf at the wall, and then settle on the wax and knife-work. His smile cracks to a grin, and he produces from his backpack two thin iron scrapers. "Would these be useful?" He asks, as he holds out both of them in offer.
(Ighlaf): Ighlaf dips their head to Ziyad's words, "I am in certain sections, yes. Guided a little by the parchment." the peeled sections having a distinctive curvature along the wall where the wax has started to be removed. Their work pauses as they hear Yasin's words and turning to look they laugh quietly. "Those...would be terribly useful, and I admit to forgetting about them. Thank you." smiling as they reach out for one of the scrapers.
Gesturing to the wall they mention, "You did not miss much. We will be shifting to lighter shades of blue these sections once uncovered."
(Yasin): "Good!" Yasin replies alongside a firm nod as he hands the scraper to Ighlaf. "I could try with that knife," he supposes, doing a little knife-scraper exchange. He holds out the other scraper to Ziyad, and says, "But hand that to me if either of you tires."
With a sweeping glance towards the wall, he says, "I'm very excited to see the next shade..." He squints at the parchment making itself known underneath the wax. "Clever. So just follow along these lines?"
(Ziyad): Ziyad gratefully accepts the second scraper from Yasin. "Thank you, my friend. I've no doubt that you'll still be more than capable of continuing long after my hand starts to cramp," he states wistfully. Turning to the wall, he starts to very carefully scrape at the paint, using Ighlaf as an example to make sure that he's doing it correctly, and going slowly enough that they'd have time to correct him if he's about to make a mistake.
(Yasin): Yasin gives a firm pat on Ziyad's shoulder, then says with a smile, "I suppose we'll see. I seem to recall you having a knack for this, when you were scraping off the grime."
He then takes the knife he'd exchanged from Ighlaf and begins to scrape at the wax, and similar to Ziyad, takes it slow, looking over to Ighlaf for confirmation of his technique.
(Sakina): As Sakina approaches the doorway hesitantly, she realizes that she's blocking the light and steps the rest of the way in rather quickly, almost tripping over the bits and bobs on the floor, "So it seems that we are taking the wax off now, maybe just part of it?" Without really expecting an immediate answer, she watches her friends for a while.
Rummaging in her satchel, she gets out a small knife that is normally used for sewing work and peers at it, then asks Ighlaf, "Do you think this will work for scarping in small places and corners?"
(Ziyad): "I wouldn't call it a knack, and I wouldn't compare what we're doing now to scraping off grime. This requires much more finesse..." Ziyad mutters, still going very slowly to avoid messing up the task. He lifts a hand to wave at Sakina without looking backwards, all his attention focused on doing as good a job as he can. Little curls and blobs of wax slowly drop to the floor, some of the smaller pieces adhering to his clothing before they manage to fall all the way.
(Ighlaf): Ighlaf begins careful movements with the scraper targeting another section of wax, slowly and methodically removing portions. They do give approving nods to Yasin and Ziyad's work, then turns to greet Sakina, "Hello! Thank you for joining us. Only a small portion, guided by the parchment I stuck beneath." Here, Ighlaf's scraping has revealed a section of parchment, and they pluck the parchment from the wall revealing the limewash beneath. "I couldn't figure a better method for the layers of this, so parchment it was."
(Sakina): Scraping away very carefully, with delicate strokes, Sakina uses the small knife to good advantage, getting into tight spots and removing the wax, bit by bit. Watching everyone working together, she smiles absently and starts humming to herself. She murmurs to no one in particular, "It is good to be a part of something, good to be leaving a work well done."
(Yasin): "It is rather good, isn't it?" Yasin asks Sakina, a smile appearing on his face even though his eyes are focused on his knife-scraping of the wax. He curves the knife along a portion of the surface, and a chunk of the wax falls to the floor once it is pried free. "We'll be leaving soon, if the voyage happens as expected, but we'll be... leaving our mark behind."
Yasin plucks the parchment free once its revealed behind the newly removed section of wax, and then says towards Ighlaf, "This was a clever idea. The parchment guides the cutting, easily."
(Ighlaf): Ighlaf gives a widening smile as they listen, "Thank you for joining me in the work and for your words." Ighlaf observes the current wax and parchment removal and comments, "I think this is the most of those parchments. Or close to from what I recall." settling the scraper they are holding aside.
"For this portion of painting it is...not entirely using the brush. Instead, hold it out and sort of hit the paintbrush handle so it spatters onto the wall."
(Yasin): Yasin gives a few nods to Ighlaf as the scraping nears its completion, then gives a grin Sakina and Ziyad's way. "So we're... just going to dip the brush in paint and give a thwack to the handle?" He inquires. He grabs a brush from nearby, but looks questioningly at it, holding it gingerly by the handle as though it might reveal some secrets to him if only he asked nicely. He holds it near one of the jars of paint, but doesn't yet apply the coloring to the brush.
(Ighlaf): Nodding back Ighlaf answers, "Exactly so, the darker shades of blue at first then continuing to lighter shades. As if an ocean wave is catching the light as it turns." reaching out to a palette, they dip their paintbrush in one of the darker shades of blue.
(Velusiyen): Just as everyone is starting to get down to business, a loud familiar sound breaks in from just outside the clinic doorway:
"OI! DOLPHINS!"
There can hardly be any mystery as to the source of this noise, but just in anyone harbored any doubts at all, they are immediately dispelled as Lucy comes whisking through the door. She has an eager grin on her face, and her deep blue eyes are lively with interest as she peers all around the clinic, noting both people and progress on the project at hand.
"Paints! Smithy! DRIFTER! Goody Skeena!" For some reason Ziyad gets a louder greeting than anyone else, possibly because Lucy expects his attention to be off wandering distantly through some scholarly realm of thought. "I'm here! Did I miss anything? I'm sure you all still need an extra hand!" If so, she has apparently come prepared to furnish it, since she's waving hers so energetically.
(Ighlaf): Ighlaf turns towards the doorway to smile at Lucy. "Good afternoon! And we are just getting started on painting after moving some wax." gesturing towards some of the strips of wax left to be cleaned later.
They hold up a paintbrush, "Less brushstrokes this time, as I was just explaining we want to splatter the paint onto the pattern, so it looks more like bits of foam and water tossed by an ocean wave."
(Yasin): Yasin doesn't react to Lucy's arrival with nearly the poise that Ighlaf does. No, in contrast, he nearly jumps, and the paintbrush he's holding falls out of one hand, landing with a clatter to the floor. Thankfully, it is void of any paint.
He laughs as he realizes the cause of his reaction, and offers a pleasant, "Good afternoon, Lucy," towards the new arrival while he reaches for his brush. "Please do join us! I think there's plenty to be done, and as Ighlaf is saying.."
At this, he DOES finally dip his brush into the paint, then hold it carefully near the designated surface.
With a skeptically raised eyebrow, he gives a good solid 'slap' to the handle of the brush, causing bits of paint to flick and splatter onto the wax-revealed surface. "Huh," he murmurs, grinning. "Seems like any of us can participate, no painting experience needed!"
(Ighlaf): Ighlaf lifts their own paintbrush to tap with their other hand, splattering a range of color onto the wall themselves. "And it is all right if some of the paint drips...just simple spread out the motions to different places and you will be fine."
(Yasin): "Very well," Yasin says with a firm nod and a series of additional taps as he guides the brush across the designated area of the mural-to-be. More splatters of colors follow. He gives a grin Lucy's way, and Sakina and Ziyad's too, and says, "If I can do it, I think the lot of us should be in good shape."
(Ighlaf): Ighlaf continues to splatter portions of color onto the wall while casting a look to those helping, "Yes, and should the paint end up elsewhere...a bit more color to things." not sounding bothered by the thought. Some portion of blue paint does make it to the uncovered limewashed walls not included in the mural.
(GM): OOC: Ighlaf just rolled luck and painting, coming up with 99.
(Yasin): Yasin stares dumbfounded for a moment at Ighlaf's splatter, then asks, "How by Asal's winged hat did you manage to make that look so effortless?" He laughs, then shakes his head and continues paint-splattering, though his produces far more collateral 'damage' of paint against the limewashed walls than Ighlaf did. Unlike Ighlaf, he winces slightly as droplets of paint land where it seems he did not necessarily intend.
(Ighlaf): Wavering their paintbrush, giving slight more bits of color to the wall Ighlaf answers with amusement, "Learned from others over time and practice, I suppose. Hit the brush in the right spot to shift the paint off it." continuing with their chosen shade for a length of time, occasionally adjusting the remaining wax as they go.
(GM): OOC: The scene fades to black.
